The NRC is currently seeking volunteers to serve on the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC), as a new Chair will take over, and the terms for its current members will expire, in August 2010. A pool of candidates is needed to cover all regions of Canada and all sectors of the construction industry that use, or benefit from, the Codes. New members will be appointed on September 1st, 2010. Although the NRC is not actively recruiting for Standing Committees at this time, individuals who are interested in serving on a committee are invited to fill out the application form, making sure to specify the committee of interest. If you are interested in becoming a member and participating in important National Code development work, please submit your expression of interest using the electronic form below by March 26, 2010. If you know of someone who would make a good member, please encourage them to submit an expression of interest. For CCBFC nominations, responses will be sent out in early summer 2010, after the responsible committee reviews the applications received. For Standing Committee volunteers, however, a response will only be sent out when a vacancy needs to be filled, as the next major rotation of committee members is not expected until 2014. The CCBFC is responsible for developing and approving the content of the National Model Construction Code documents. In consultation with the provinces and territories, it is also responsible for setting code development policy direction and overseeing the development process to ensure it is open, transparent and consensus-based. The Commission oversees the work of nine standing committees whose members apply their experience in various technical areas to develop and improve the Codes, so as to help protect the health and safety of Canadians. These areas include:
CCBFC members are expected to be broadly knowledgeable on Code-related matters and able to exercise broad objective judgments. They are selected for their individual expertise and experience with the Codes – not as delegates from a particular interest group. The estimated workload associated with these responsibilities represents five to ten days in a given year for most members. Appointments are for a five-year term and, although there is no remuneration, NRC does reimburse expenses incurred in attending meetings.
