Codes Development

The National Fire Code of Canada 1995 and the National Fire Code of Canada 2005 contain technical requirements designed to provide an acceptable level of fire safety within a community.

The NFC is prepared under the auspices of the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes and is published by the National Research Council of Canada. The first edition was published in 1963. The 2005 NFC is in an objective-based code format.

All requirements in the 2005 NFC are linked to one or more of the following three top-level objectives:

Under Canada's Constitution Act, regulation of fire safety is the responsibility of provincial and territorial governments. The NFC is in the form of a model code to permit adoption by the appropriate authority. Most provinces and territories adopt or adapt the model NFC and enforce its requirements.

Introduction to Objective-Based Codes
The following basic awareness course is designed to help Code users understand the new objective-based approach of the 2005 NFC. The seven Modules of the course briefly yet thoroughly explain the new terminology and concepts of the objective-based approach supported by real examples using Code provisions. A summary at the end of each Module can serve as a quick reference in the future.
