Summary of Significant Proposed Changes

Three categories of changes have been relocated from the NFC to the NBC. These can be summarized as follows:

• creation of a new Subsection 3.3.6. dealing with the design of hazardous locations
• expansion of Subsection 3.3.5. dealing with industrial occupancies, and
• insertion of miscellaneous provisions throughout Parts 3, 4, 5, and 6 related to protection and monitoring of hazardous areas.

Firstly, the requirements related to the design of hazardous locations specify fire protection measures such as sprinklers, fire separations, ventilation, and clearances for the rooms or buildings housing these hazardous products. Secondly, the requirements related to industrial occupancies identify fire protection measures for laboratories, dry cleaning plants, drying ovens, pump houses, and distilleries. Finally, the miscellaneous provisions capture the monitoring, security and communication requirements for helicopter landing roofs, air supported structures, and piers.
