About Canada's Code Development System

The Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC) develops the National Model Construction Codes through a consensus-based process that relies on the voluntary contributions of public and private sector experts from across Canada. Under the auspices of the CCBFC, nine standing committees review and develop proposed technical changes to the Codes before they are submitted for public review. The changes must then be approved by the CCBFC before publication by the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).

Policy advice to the CCBFC, from the provinces and territories, is provided through the Provincial/Territorial Policy Advisory Committee on Codes (PTPACC). This forum gives the provinces and territories the opportunity to provide guidance on the scope, content, format, and development process of the Codes.

The National Model Construction Codes are available for purchase through the NRC Virtual Store (printed and CD-ROM formats). Online versions are also available through a Web-based subscription service (see the NRC CODES - GUIDES Online Library for more information). Revisions and errata are provided free of charge.
