 About CCBFC

The Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC) develops and maintains six of Canada's model construction and fire codes and oversees the work of several standing committees, special purpose committees, and task groups. CCBFC members are selected from across Canada and appointed by the National Research Council (NRC).

The CCBFC receives policy advice from the Provincial/Territorial Policy Advisory Committee on Codes (PTPACC) which is made up of representatives from the provincial and territorial ministries responsible for building, plumbing and fire safety regulation.

Standing committee members are appointed by the CCBFC Nominating Committee. Seven standing committees are responsible for the development of the technical content of specific parts of the codes and related documents, such as user's guides. The CCBFC formally approves all model code documents and technical revisions prior to publication by the NRC.

The Strategic Plan of the CCBFC 1995-2000 (see also Action Plan), which was prepared following consultation with industry, the regulatory community, and other code users, laid the groundwork for the development of the objective-based codes which will be published in 2005.

The Canadian Codes Centre of the National Research Council's Institute for Research in Construction (IRC) provides technical and administrative support to the CCBFC committees. The Canadian Codes Centre also responds to technical inquiries and co-ordinates communication between the committees and IRC's research specialists.

The National Research Council of Canada established the Associate Committee on the National Building Code in the 1940s and the Associate Committee on the National Fire Code in 1956 to encourage uniformity of building and fire regulations throughout Canada. These two committees were replaced by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes in 1991.
